Brentwood Grand Prix - Cat4/5 criterium race

Last Sunday, I entered my first criterium race at the 2013 Brentwood Grand Prix. The category 4/5 race, which is the entry level race category, was at 7am in the morning, a 1 mile circuit course, duration 35min with the last 5 laps counted down. I had been training the weeks before and I thought I was in decent shape...boy was I wrong: the race started out super fast and after a few laps I realized this is going to be very hard, so I tried to stay on the wheels of others to draft and save energy, we were doing 25-30mph on the straight stretches of the course. Half way into the race, the pace was picked up even higher. I realized others were passing me left and right and suddenly I found myself pretty lonely in the back. I gave it one more push to stay with them, but I realized my race was over when the race official on his motorbike passed me. Others dropped out a little later too and I got ahead of them and sprinted to the finish line with the determination of not being the last one. Finished 47th place out of 52, not too bad for the first race, it was a great experience and a lot of fun. Next year the goal is to finish somewhere in the top 20...

Below the photos is a video clip of the first lap that I've recorded with a GoPro mounted to my handlebar, enjoy!
